Hemmingway is seen at his best in the context of his novel The Old Man and the Sea. It is a simple and short novel about a very aged and old fisherman, Santiago who leads a fair, just, pragmatic and unstated spiritual life. It is all about Santiago and what happens between Santiago and the fish. A close study of Hemmingway’s delineation of Santiago demystifies how a simple old aged fisherman demands such an attention and respect.
In fact, it becomes quite evident that we find a very rare and unique unity of thought, expression and action in Santiago, which renders grand and inspiring yet simple and spiritual character. Spiritual life is nothing but the rare combination of clarity of thought and simple living. It is seen in facing all life situations with clear headedness and undeterred performance. The paper is fully devoted to analyse this fact in detail.
His heroism is natural and unstrained. He lets life happen and follows the natural flow of life. The most striking feature of his character is his flexibility to pitch himself anywhere in the spectrum of possibilities. In other words, to be direct and plain, He is extremely judicious in his choice of accepting or fighting the life situations.
