Alternative assessment is an ongoing process of making judgment about students’ progress in language by using nonconventional strategies. This paper attempts to elaborate a number of alternative techniques and distinguishes between alternative assessments and traditional form of assessment. It advocates the opportunities of alternative assessment that help students to become active, dynamic and spontaneous in their language learning process. At the end of the paper, I discuss some obstacles of using this nontraditional, time-consuming test format and suggest combinations of perspectives and approaches that might be relevant in implementing these authentic, process-oriented assessments.
