Abstract:

This article focuses on the issue of women’s liberation in the postcolonial independent Indian context. Even after the motherland attained independence, both married as well as  unmarried  women have to be in dependence upon a man for their livelihood. Hence she is without individualism which she is entitled to attain like a man does. In this novel women who are quite for sometime submissive to men come out of their tangle when they realize the importance of individualism and independence. For some, education plays a vital role in realizing this fact. For some, life experience teaches them that individualism and independent thinking are inevitable in a person’s life to lead a contended and happy life. Hence success in life can be rated with regard to their independent thinking and having individualistic attitudes. It is imperative for every woman to learn to acquire the trait of individualism as well as independent thinking with a focus of leading a happy life.The protagonist in this novel learns from her fellow passengers how to attain the state of liberation when they tell her that they have shattered the traditional norms with regard to male supremacy
