In the recent years the role of women in human society has become a subject of great interest. In fact there has been a consciousness among women of their own dignity and work. My paper will be a humble attempt to look deeper to deal correctly with the growing role of women in the society. The study will take help from the articles and writings of Xavier Mao, “The Status of women in Mao Society” in Lucy Zehol “Women in Naga Society”, “The Mao Naga Tribe of Manipur” by L. M. Maheo and “Women’s Role in the 20th Century Manipur” by Tingneichong G. Kipgen. Tracing back to the traditional Mao Society, one comes across a number of folk songs, folk dances and stories some of which are dedicated to men folk on account of their success and manliness. In this we can depict that women must have been creative and great composure, adding joy and beauty to the rich culture. Even though in most of the women’s writings, the women characters are found caught in inner conflicts and in search for freedom, rights and identity, we can bring them to the lime light considering different aspect of their contributions. This paper thus attempts to study the role and status of women in Mao community. It also designed to highlight how far Mao women are free to participate in the decision making process with other male members of the society and how women take part in the political issues.
Key words: Tribal Women, Status, role, contribution, literature.
