A CORRELATION STUDY OF PROVERBS IN BAMANANKAN
Proverbs are expressions revealing the cosmology of speech communities. As well, they reflect the attitudes of these peoaple towards their environment. This paper therefore examines a corpus of 10 proverbs randomly selected from casual conversations. Ethnographic approach to proverbs was used to analyze the correlation between the sociolinguistic variables of age and gender and the use of proverbs in Bamanankan. A sample of 98 undergraduate students participated in the study. Findings reveal that male students understand proverbs better than female students; though interpreting proverbs was a problem for the majority of the respondents.
