Abstract

At the +2 stage in Andhra Pradesh many junior intermediate students especially science students choose English as the medium of instruction for better career prospects.  The students who have learnt through Telugu medium up to class X find the switch over to English medium very difficult because of their inadequate mastery over English.  This study proposes that reading skills have a bearing on the qualitative and quantitative performance of the learners.  It gives a pivotal role to developing reading skills.  The model of course design identifies the target situation, describes the reading process, reviews the relevant literature, describes the symptoms, suggests the methodology to be used with some illustrate materials and makes some suggestions regarding the evaluation of the students’ performance and reading skills.
