The convention of composing lyrics on the Vaishnava theme, which was started by Jayadeva and carried forward by later Vaishnava lyrical poets of the medieval Bengal, was taken into a new stature by its modern luminary Rabindranath Tagore. Though Tagore did not consider himself as a poet of the Vaishnava tradition, a little observation will reveal the fact that his melodies and verses breathe out the genuine essence of Vaishnava poetry. That is why Vaishnava scholar Harekrishna Mukhopadhaya in his book Padavali Parichay has acknowledged Tagore as a true Vaishnava and also the last eminent poet of the great Vaishnava poetic convention.
