Mothers dominating their own sons,’ an evil which was prevailing in D. H. Lawrence’s own society is the main theme of Sons and Lovers. Tireless efforts of Lawrence in order to eradicate this social evil from the society are unfortunately not appreciated by the critics. It is also unfortunate that he is misunderstood as a supporter of Sigmund Freud. He Unlike Freud shows the ill effects of mother’s excessive love on their sons. He has become the voice of thousands of young man in his times. It was a problem faced by the youth of England at the beginning of twentieth century. In a letter to Edward Garnet, dated November 14, 1912, Lawrence says to him that, “I tell you I have written a great book. It’s the tragedy of thousands of young men in England. . . . Read my novel. It’s a great novel” (161). Lawrence actually uses his art to depict the bad condition of the youth including himself. He himself suffered a lot because of his mother’s excessive love that left him restless throughout his life. Lawrence writes, because of the internal compulsion or necessity. He seeks relief from his internal problems by externalising them in fiction. The present study aims at to analyse that Mrs Morel in Sons and Lovers is the main reason of bringing the catastrophe in the lives of different characters, particularly in Paul Morels’. The mother in the novel is the most dominant character. Undoubtedly, the story revolves around her. Due to the failure in her relationship with her husband, she tries to get the emotional fulfilment from her sons by laying all her claims on them. The researcher concludes that the mother has dominated her sons, inspite of their attempts to free their selves they are unsuccessful. “Researcher believes that Mrs Morel fails both as a wife and as a mother. She is unable to give the both, their proper positions which they naturally deserve. She ignores her husband and reduces him to the mere child or servant and sublimes her two sons William and Paul, as she allows them to play the roles of surrogate husbands to her. This change in the natural positions makes both husband and children unhappy and ultimately ruins the whole family” (242).  It cannot be claimed that this paper is the last word on the subject. It is however, believed that it would open new avenues of study on Sons and Lovers.

Key words: D. H. Lawrence, Freud, Oedipal Complex, Fulfilment, Relationship, Catastrophe and Dominant.
