In our rapidly changing society we cannot deny the important role which English is playing, in our education, our relations and our careers. The expansion of scientific, technical and economic activity on a huge scale was a great change which took place after World War II. Some of these changes influenced language teaching and learning created a demand for a common international language which led to the growth of ESP in the early 1960’s. Teaching and learning of English now moved from General to Specific. Business, media, entertainment, internet are to name a few international domains which pushed English further as a global language and English penetrated deeply into the fabric of non-English speaking countries like China, Japan and India too. A need for specific English was felt which could satiate the thirst of many who demanded it in various areas. Economy all over the world was changing fast and in the 1950s and 1960s, with the growth of science and business, the demand of specific English Language also grew thereby increasing the number of international students migrating to UK, USA and Australia. This paper aims to discuss some basic concepts of the ‘English for Specific Purposes’ (ESP), approach to language teaching, types of ESP, and the role of ESP teachers to meet learners` needs with a special focus on Business English.
