Abstract

Feminism is a political movement that seeks justice for women and advocates women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, economic and religious equality to men. The statement of emancipation is the freedom  and  responsibility  of  choice. Traditionally  Indian  society  is  a  male  dominated  one  where  individual  rights  are  subordinated  to  group  or  social  role  expectation. In  such  a  society, woman’s  individual self  has  very  little  recognition. Self-effacement is  her  normal  way  of  life. Shashi  Deshpande  has  made  a  bold  attempt  in  her  works  to  give  voice  to  the  frustrations  and  disappointments  of  women. Deshpande  is  certainly  a  feminist writer, but  hers  is  not the  strident  and  militant feminism, which  sees the  male as  the cause of  all  trouble. The fault lies with the woman who submits to  the male’s sense of  superiority. The protagonist of this novel tries  to assert  herself as  independent  individual  through confrontations with  the  traditional  constraints  in  the  Society.

“Shashi Deshpande has  emerged  as  a great  literary  force   in  Indian  Writing  in  English  and  she  reflects  a  realistic  picture  of  contemporary  middle  class  woman” (Sharma 20). She has  explored  the  emotional  world  of  women  with  admirable  insight  and  sympathetic  perception. She  has  provided  in  her  female  protagonist  a  positive  sense  of  feminine  identity  by  moving  them  towards  self-definition  and   self realization. Her  novels  are  concerned  with  a  woman’s  quest  for  self, an  exploration  into  the  female  psyche  and  an  understanding  of  the  mysteries  of  life  and  the  protagonists’  place in  it. The protagonists of  her  novels  are  modern, educated, independent, middle class  women. Their  search  for  individuality  and  identity  is  a  recurring  theme  in  Deshpande’s  novels. Women  in  her  novels  have  established  themselves  as  autonomous  beings  free  from  the  restrictions  imposed  by  society, culture, nature  and  also  free  from  their  own  fears  and  guilt  that  they  have  reached  a  stage  of  understanding  and  fundamental  truth .
