Abstract

The latter half of the eighteenth century, the age of Jane Austen, was an age of transition or was an era of immense expansion. Men found their hearts and sobbed like children; they formed for themselves new ideals of conduct and vast and visionary schemes for their social amelioration. The novels of Jane Austen have had a more lasting impact than any others of her period writing in the first two decades of nineteenth century, Jane Austen appears historically, both in her social attitudes and formally in her art, as a kind of connecting link or hinge. Do we see Jane Austen as a feminist moralist or a forerunner of modern feminism?

Keywords: visionary, moralist, feminist, amelioration, forerunner.
