Abstract

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels’ contribution in the realm of strategic thought lay in their interpretation of history as the decisive factor of society. Before them, history was understood in various ways. First, the theory of divine right of kingship, as propagated by some, was important in shaping the relationship between God and king, and the moral and immoral forces, Secondly some interpreted history as a political process wherein kings, legislators and soldiers became dominant forces of society. The third was the “hero” interpretation of history, but this approach was more closely knitted to the political one. Fourthly, few understood history in terms of ideology as a principal cause of the historical process and material condition of society. Lastly, history was studied in the form of war influencing the different phases of human society.
