Abstract:

The large scale migration of Indians around the globe in the 19th and the 20th century prepared the grounds for the future growth of globalization, multiculturalism and of hybridized societies. The Bollywood Industry captures the insights of the diasporic community and reflects how Indian diasporic communities spread across the globe have been contributing towards and disseminating the idea of globalization and multiculturalism in the world. The Bollywood industry aims to transport the culture and tradition of India across the globe and portrays that whether displaced or deterritorialized, Indians have been the first who gave a multicultural colouring to their host countries and cultures by infusing the culture and customs of their homeland into the foreign land. Thus, they not only accepted the culture of their host country but also maintained their originality and cultural uniqueness. The paper focuses on the shift in Bollywood Cinema which appeals to the diasporic population. In this paper through different Bollywood movies an attempt has been made to highlight how the Bollywood cinema mirrors the change from being westoxicated to a globalised individual. The differences between the first generation of diaspora who affirms the need to construct a replica of India in a foreign land thus highlighting the need to assert Indianness in a newly formed globalized societies and second generation of diaspora who do not assert the alienation or nostalgia for homeland in the select bollywood films is brought into the picture. However, the argument is in times of crisis the diasporic entity always look forward to their homeland.
