This paper is an attempt to discuss poetic genius of John Masefield who has followed throughout in the footsteps of Chaucer and Shakespeare, has given something, pictures of the sea and those of the English country side. He wrote poetry in a plain language, dealing with the largest class of humanity. Temperamentally, he is highly romantic, but under the hard experience of his life, he was helplessly drawn to realism in poetic art. Masefield has remained sensitive to the tradition of English poetry, but he has never been circumscribed by it. His foundations rest unshakably upon it, but he has built his own building. Masefield brought back to poetry a mixture of beauty and brutality, which is its most human and enduring quality. He is distinguished for the wide range of his art.
