Caryl Phillips is a British writer of African-Caribbean descent. He grew up among white working class as a black man. The European Tribe is concerned with Phillips’s experiences as a black man among different tribes of European continent. Phillips’s journey to Venice and Amsterdam are inspired by Jewish Diaspora. Venice has a long history of Jewish suffering. Venetian Ghetto refers to political restriction on Jewish rights. Shakespeare’s character Shylock exemplifies Venetian Ghetto. Phillips also recalls the suffering of Shylock in his travelogue. Another Jewish character dealt by Phillips in the book is Anne Frank. Her diary describes Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The mistreatment of minorities and their sufferings at the hands of whites are the central topic of this book. The predicament of Shakespeare’s other character Othello is also discussed here. The present paper focuses on Phillips’s journey to Venice and Amsterdam with special reference to the Jewish Diaspora.
