The word ‘‘spirituality’’ refers to the deepest values and meanings by which people seek to live. In other words, Spirituality arises from a creative and dynamic synthesis of faith and life, forged in the crucible of desire to live out the Christian faith authentically, responsibly, effectively and fully. The individual and community are understood to be inspired or moved by spirit which is understood to be that particular aspect which refers to their life principle – the inner reality – with emotions and motivations.
In addition to the etymological roots, spirituality can sometimes be understood as faith. ‘Faith’ too can be seen to represent the quest for meaning that is a distinctively human trait. Accordingly, spirituality encompasses a higher or more aware part of one’s consciousness that is separate from one’s ego or lower self. Unlike ego that sees itself as disconnected from everything, the higher or true self embraces all manner of things and understands that everything in the universe is connected.
