Abstract

Escapism is the tendency to seek disruption, untimely and momentary relief from unfriendly or harsh realities of the society, especially by seeking alternative arrangements like entertainment or engaging in the world of fantasy by remaining aloof towards the ultimate truth or virtual realities of Life.

It’s a human psychology whether young or old everyone tries to escape from harsh realities. But the question is why we look for Escapism in our life. Why can’t we face the situation with confidence and grace and why do we criticize or blame others for it. This research paper intends to identify the use of ‘Escapism’ from the writings of Tennessee William’s two prize winning selective plays ‘ The Glass Menagerie’ and ‘The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof’.

Key Words: Escapism, Distress, Inferiority, Disappointment, Harsh Realities, Tennessee Williams
