Loss of certainty is the characteristic of modern age. This uncertainty can be well reflected in the life of modern man. He is not certain of anything, even of his life. In this busy materialistic world, man doesn’t know for whom he is living or what the aim of his life is. He is living only because he is born. He feels like being isolated in a desert- a wasteland deprived of love. He is in search of love. Lack of true love forces man to indulge in various sinful deeds. Though blessed with all the luxuries of life, man suffers isolation and estrangement. This knot of alienation faced by modern man forms the crux of Seth’s verse novel, The Golden Gate. Life of modern man is portrayed through John, the central character of the novel. The novel begins and ends with John alone, the journey of John from ignorance to self discovery.
