Abstract

The main aim of this preliminary research was to investigate Yekatit 23 Comprehensive Elementary School English language teachers’ awareness and perceptions towards using the whole language approach in their EFL classrooms. To do so, the researcher used comprehensive sampling technique to select the sample respondents for the study because there are only three English language teachers who teach in grades 5-8 in Yekatit 23 Comprehensive Elementary School found in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Thus, all the three English language teachers were the participants of the study. To gather relevant data for the study, the researcher employed a semi-structured interview. The findings of the study show that English language teachers have awareness about the whole language approach. Besides this, their perceptions towards using the whole language approach in EFL classrooms are better. On the basis of the findings, the researcher recommended that it is better that another main research should be conducted just to know the beliefs and practices that teachers have about the whole language approach, to what extent they employ the whole language approach to develop their students’ language aspects, and the effects of using this approach on learners’ language development.
