The poetic world of eminent writer, Sukumar Ray’s, AbolTabol is factual yet fascinating. It contains characters and themes true to life, yet coated with the insignias of the imagined. In his version of understanding existentialism, Jean Paul Satre claimed that “existence precedes essence” or in other words, individuals (or objects) exist before they are defined by social labels, roles and stereotypes. Similarly, AbolTabol, an anthology of poems, was published in 1923 and only about 72 years later in 1995, Wendy B Faris developed her theory on Magic Realism, yet, one can find in the ‘existence’ of Ray’s poems, the glimpses of the ‘essence’ of magic realism. This paper aspires to locate those elements of magic realism, in the poems of Sukumar Ray, primarily from AbolTabol and render a renewed significance to the poet and his poems.
