If only life passed in the blink of an eye
Or a blink of an eye bookended a lifetime,
We would see ageless stars in a lightning
And hear every thunder in a heartbeat.
To hear the ocean in every raindrop
Or listen for raindrops in an ocean
Is to know the static beneath all sounds
And sense a song in the vast Silence.
Its words veil the tune underneath
No more than the tune unveils the Truth;
As clouds cover the moon, and the moon
Uncovers the shadows of a latent Sun.
A shadow dark is the spawn of light;
A shadow bright is the spawn of sight;
And nothing is where sight is not,
Though not everything is of sight.
Of sight, of sound, of touch, of taste,
Does the cosmos tread into thought;
But Insight surpasses the senses,
Though it, thro’ the sensed, is sought.
Of all that is sought, a little is found;
Of all that is found, a little is grasped;
While what is Unsought, plain, remains
To be known, and never to be held.
The blinding grip of a closed fist
The world enslaves, but not the wind;
An open hand, though, is like breath:
It knows not to have; it strains not, to Be.
