Abstract: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the story of Stephen Dedalus, an alter ego of James Joyce. The novel is divided into 5 sections showcasing transcendence and intellectual development of protagonist through the narratives. Through Stephen’s Conciousness the whole Dublin and its peculiar characteristics is revealed. Stephen’s  childhood, adolescence and manhood is detailed by Joyce through the stream of conciosuness technique.  Stephen faced identity crisis and in order to establish himself as an individual and to find his identity as an artist, after seeing a woman on the beach, he seeks self-imposed exile.  The entries in his journal raise the curtain to reveal his identity as an artist and his achieving transcendence.
