Theatre is the next novel written in Maugham’s middle phase, it explores relationship of the characters who belong to the world of drama and who imitate human emotions artificially. W.S. Maugham himself was a great lover of art and he produced many outstanding plays. Some unusual realism of the life of artists is highlighted ingeniously by the novelist in the novel Theatre. How the life of an actor or actress is differentiated from that of an ordinary man, this is also a search of W.S. Maugham that he manifests through the protagonist of the novel Theatre. The life with actors or actresses show on the stage is temporary and it is sometimes tragic and sometimes happy and immediately after the end of their performances on the stage they come out from the impacts of artificial emotions. But when they play their roles as real human beings, the intensity of various emotions that are determined by original circumstances, is very deeper and effective. These are the points which are primarily concerned with the theme of the novel Theatre and their presentation in the novel is done by Maugham’s typical woman character Julia Lambert.
