Abstract: William Golding’s The Inheritors, in reverting the Wellsian history about the Neanderthals, creates a new fictional idiom which shows a clear departure from the realist conventions of the nineteenth-century novel. Not only does he reject the temporal-spatial coordinates in the novel, essential devices of realist fiction, but he dehistoricizes the fictional landscape in order to give expression to his version of Neanderthal reality

[Key-words: historicism, Neanderthals, realism, spatiality-temporality, perceptive reality]
