Abstract

Girish Ragunadha Karna was born on 19th May 1938 in Matheran, Maharashtra into a
Konkani-speaking family. He is also an actor, film director screen writer. Based on his serious
exploration of folklore mythology and history his initials schooling was in Marathi.As a youngster,
Karna was on Ardenadmire of yakshagana and the theater in his village. His plays, written in
Kannada, have been widely translated into English and all major Indianlanguage, when karnad
started writing plays, Kannada literature was highly influenced by the renaissance in eastern
literature, the subject of his plays reflect the problems and chellages of contemporary life, and
endeavorto forge a link between the past and the present. karnad found a approach like drawing
historical and mythological sources to foul contemporary themes. His first play “Yayati”(1961)
ridicules the ironies of life through character in Mahabharata and became an instant success,
immediately translated and staged in several other Indian languages. Tughlag established karnad
as one of the most promising playwrights in the country. A large number of his Kannada plays
have been translated by Dr. Bhargavi p. Rax.
