Memory and Identity in Alan Machado’s Shades within Shadow
Keywords:Memory, identity, collective, cultural , communicative and collected
Memory is defined as the ability to remember or recall events which have taken place in the past sometimes to commemorate the dead. Many theorists and sociologists like Maurice Halbwachs and Jan Assmannbelieve that memories enable to build community identities. Memory and identity particularly intersect in the contexts of ethnic cleansing, genocide, and wars. The recalling and recollecting of sites of different kinds of memory - cultural, collective, communicative and collected helps in concretion of a socio-ethnic community identity. This paper looks at Shades within Shadow by Alan Machado as a memory text which corresponds to social identification by individuals or groups through remembering.
