R.K. Narayan’s The English Teacher: A Love Story
The English Teacher expounds the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and psychological journey of a college lecturer, Krishna. It is the journey of a person from what he pretends to be to what he actually is. The transformation and the amelioration that the lecturer attains is a by-product of his pursuit of love. The present paper explores that the lecturer’s raison d’etre is his wife. It is the absence of his wife which makes him realise the absurdity of his life without her. The headmaster and the old man act only as catalysts but the principal driving force behind Krishna’s metamorphism is the premature death of his wife. The vacuum created in his life exhorts him to do the unconventional which, otherwise, he might have never mustered courage to do.Though the wordly relationship of Krishna and his wife comes to an end very soon but the resurrection of the relationship as lovers is eternal. The brief period of togetherness makes the lovers to blur the boundaries of life and death.
