Abstract

The history of cinema is also the history of film adaptations. The early years of cinema are characterised by a heavy dependence on literary sources.Adaptation presents not merely an opportunity to read the historical context in which it is made but also an occasion to reappraise the issues dealt with in its source material.Like adaptation remakes are also a common element in the making of movies.AnuragKashyap’s 2009 movie Dev D is the adaptation of SaratchandraChattopadhya’s novel Devdas. This paper purports to juxtapose the representation of the charactersDevdas, Parvati and Chandramukhi in the novel and in the movie.
