THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES ON PUPILS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KENEMA CITY.

Abstract

The study is an investigation on the effectiveness of Guidance and Counseling services on pupils in secondary schools.The investigation adopted a descriptive research design of a survey type.The study used a target population sample of one hundred and fifty  (150) students and eighteen(18) teachers comprisingsix (6) Principals, six (6)teachers Counselors and six(6) class teachers.  Random sampling techniques were used to select theschools.Questionnaires were administered and interview also was conducted. The results as analyzed revealed that  guidance and counseling services were not effective in secondary schools in Kenema city due to the following: lack of professional counselors, lack of office space, lack of official recognition, lack of support from parents and traditional myth.It is hoped that the Ministry of Education Science and Technology should provide guidelines on the implementation of effective, guidance and counselling strategies/procedures and their relevance on pupils. The training of guidance counselors should be vigorously pursed so that counselors can be well grounded to handle the problems of pupils. The guidance counselors should be given special allowance/motivation to facilitate their workThe parents, teachers and school administrators should work in partnershipwith the guidance counselors.Guidance and Counselling should be offered as a subject in schools so that pupils can know and understand the importance of it.
