The God of Small Things as a feminist study

Abstract

The God of Small Things inculcates key critical contexts and ideas among them the concept of the subaltern, feminism, gender studies, linguistic- based approaches and criticism are the most significant one. A feminist approach to this text brings forth one of the protagonists Ammu who has not been given equal rights and opportunities alongside men. She is oppressed and crushed in the patriarchal set up of the novel. Arundhati Roy tries to bring out the plight of Ammu’s character and her struggle for Locust Stand I throughout the novel. Ammu is doubly colonized first by colonialism and again by patriarchal social norms. Roy’s endeavours to raise her voice and cause in the novel by making her one of the protagonists, gives this novel a feminist inclination.
