  • The research paper must not be published elsewhere or be under review for publication in another journal.
  • Both the Abstract and Conclusion ought to emphasize your original research. The conclusion ought to be self-contained and easily understood without needing to reference other sources.

    Research Paper Formatting Rules

Over time, we have updated the style of our published research articles. The following guidelines reflect the latest revisions. You may encounter earlier papers in different styles.

    1. Font Style and Size:

      • Use Times New Roman font throughout the paper.
      • The body of the research paper should range between 1500 – 6000 words.
      • Font size should be 12 points.
      • Ensure the paper is double-spaced, including the title page, quotations, notes, and references page.
    2. Title:

      • The title must be Center Aligned with a font size of 16 points.
      • Do not underline, italicize, or enclose the title in quotation marks.
      • Use Title Case for the title, except for subtitles where necessary.
    3. Author's Name:

      • The author’s name should be Left Aligned.
    4. Abstract and Keywords:

      • The abstract should be Center Aligned with an ideal word limit of 200-250 words.
      • Keywords should follow the abstract in the next paragraph.
      • The abstract should not be indented, but the first line of all subsequent paragraphs should be indented by 0.5 inches.
    5. Margins:

      • Set the margins to 1 inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, and right).
    6. Works Cited/References:

      • Works Cited or References should be on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
      • The title Works Cited/References should be Center Aligned.
      • If a reference entry spans more than one line, the second line should have a 0.5-inch indentation.
      • Ensure in-text citations and the Works Cited/References are properly correlated to avoid plagiarism.
      • All citations must be appropriately referenced within the body of the manuscript.
    7. Figures, Images, and Tables:

      • All figures, images, and tables must be embedded in the original text. Separate files or documents for these elements will not be accepted.
  1. How to Write In-Text Citations

    1. General Rule:

      • All in-text citations must have a corresponding entry in the Works Cited/References section at the end of the paper.
      • Similarly, every entry in the Works Cited/References must be appropriately cited within the text. Both must align to ensure accuracy and avoid plagiarism.
      • Failing to include proper citations for each in-text reference will result in the manuscript being deemed incomplete and rejected.
    2. Page Number Inclusion:

      • APA Style: Include the author’s last name, publication year, and page number.
        • Example: (Shakespeare, 2018, p. 07).
      • MLA Style: Include the author’s last name and the page number. You may also include the publication year if desired.
        • Example: (Shakespeare 07).
    3. When the Author’s Name is Missing:

      • Use a few words from the title or heading, followed by the page number in parentheses.
        • Example: “Dolly and I greeted each other with a slight nod” (Two States 62).
    4. When the Author is Named in the Sentence:

      • Only the page number is required in parentheses.
        • Example: According to Shakespeare, ......................... (p. 07).
    5. Quotations from Internet-Based Sources:

      • Do not include the full URL in the in-text citation. Instead:
        • If the author’s name is available, include their name and the page/section number (if applicable).
        • If the author’s name is missing, use the title and section/page number (if available).
        • Example: (Writer’s Name, Section 5) or (“Article Title,” Section 3).

By following these guidelines, you ensure that your citations are accurate and compliant with standard academic practices.

How to Write Works Cited/References:

Please follow the basic general format and core elements for any citation:

  1. Author
  2. Title of Source
  3. Title of Container (do not list the container for stand-alone books, e.g., novels)
  4. Other Contributors (e.g., translators or editors)
  5. Version (edition)
  6. Number (e.g., volume and issue number)
  7. Publisher
  8. Publication Date
  9. Location (pages, paragraphs, URL, or DOI)
  10. Second Container’s Title (if applicable), including contributors, version, number, publisher, publication date, location, and date of access (if applicable).

Basic Book Format

Please follow the format below if citing a book:

  • Format:
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Year. pp. (Provide the page numbers, if applicable).

If citing a full book:

  • Page numbers are not required because the citation refers to the entire book.
    • Correct Format:
Smith, John. Understanding Literature. New York, Oxford Press, 2020.

If citing a specific chapter, section, or excerpt:

  • Page numbers are required to specify the range of the content used.
    • Correct Format:
Smith, John. Understanding Literature. New York, Oxford Press, 2020, pp. 15-20.

In-text Citation and Reference List Practices:

  • In-text citation: You specify the page number in the citation to indicate where the information appears in the text.

    • Example: (Smith, 2020, p. 15)
  • Reference List: For a full book citation, you do not need to include the page number if the entire book is cited.

    • Correct: Smith, John. Understanding Literature. New York, Oxford Press, 2020.

However, if you are citing a specific part of the book (such as a chapter or section), and you mention page numbers in the in-text citation, it is still acceptable to omit page numbers in the Works Cited/References entry unless it’s relevant to that specific source.

Citing from Online Sources

SMART MOVES JOURNAL IJELLH requires a URL when citing online sources, if a DOI is available, cite the DOI number instead of the URL. List Works Cited of the online electronic journal the title of the source in quotation marks and the title of the container in italics, followed by a comma and the date of publication. We recommend you to provide the date you accessed the online source at the end of the citation but it is not mandatory.

Author. "Title." Title of container (self-contained if book), Other contributors (translators or editors), Version (edition), Number (vol. and/or no.), Publisher, Publication Date, Location (pages, paragraphs and/or URL, DOI or permalink). 2nd container’s title, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location and Date of Access (if applicable).
