The Plight of Homosexuals in Mahesh Dattani’s On a Muggy Night in Mumbai
Abstract
Mahesh Dattani,the famous Indian playwright through his plays presents the issues which are deemed as taboos, the issues which need to be identified, addressed, accepted and to be solved without preconception and contempt. The cultural, religious and social structure of Indian society hasbeen biased which has not only made the social structure feeble but also a suffocated one where the individuality of a person may be a child, woman, transgender, eunuch, homosexuals is not recognised and thereby marginalising them .The society always eager to curb the expressions of the homosexuals. Dattani hasboldly presented the plight of the homosexuals through his writings. Through his plays he urges for homosexuals’ identity and also to deal with their identity crisis. The traits the persons show or the sexual inclination they have is natural and for that they have to deal with the identity crisis, suppression of their emotion and guilt. They try to find their own common group for their revelation of true identity. Through his play, On a Muggy Night in Mumbai, Dattani interrogates and demands answers on the treatment meted out to Homosexuals.
