Literature and Teaching
Abstract
Language generally represents literature. Language argues for the use of literature for language teaching purposes. Language teaching purposes can promote literary understanding. Literature is the media of teaching and learning authentic language also it may foster the development of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. Language of literature is well organized and wonderful choice of diction. A close look at Literature and Language show that the two are closely related. This close relationship is obvious because from all indications, literature presupposes language. It is inconceivable to discuss literature without reference to language. At the senior secondary level, the subjects are taught in different classroom settings by teachers that are either designate literature teachers or English teachers. In this way, Literature is a potential source of learner’s motivation. Literary texts provide a source of linguistic competency and help learners to practise the four language skills - speaking, listening, reading along with grammatical structures and new vocabulary. It is proved that literary texts provide a lot of chances for multi-sensorial classroom experiences.
“ Literature just adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become” C.S.Lewis (British Scholar and Novelist, 1898-1963).
