The impact of Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) in Second Language Learning

Abstract

Second language anxiety is a significant affective variable that causes serious impediment in second language production. It impacts the learners’ achievement and leads to frustration and apprehension. One of the issues in second language classroom is fear of negative evaluation from peers and teachers. The thought of being watched by others promotes insecurity and uncomfortable and also creates negative attitude towards the teachers, peers and the learning process. In this regard the present paper focuses on the impact of fear of negative evaluation in second language learning. It also investigates how male and female perceive differently in their learning process. Further, it discusses the role of teacher in providing conducive learning atmosphere to create low affective filter among learners.
