A Voiceless Perquisation for Searching Uniqueness in Manu Joseph’s Serious Men

Abstract

Recent era in Indian novel in English reflects the dilemma of Dalit society and describes the actual mind of the common people in India. Modern novelists in Indian writing in English study the important controversies regarding religions and castes problems, analyze the matter and suggest the solutions directly or indirectly through the characters of their novels. Subalternity is an attempt to analyze the problem of marginality and subordination in all spheres of life. A person’s individuality is a pre-dominant culture prevailing in many parts of the world, particularly India. Manu Joseph’s Serious Men (2010) revolves around the different attitudes of characterization and cultural identity in contemporary India. It traces the subaltern voices being crushed by the privileged groups (mentally and economically) of society. The story focuses on the concept of Dalit man’s angst, innocent furious and vengeance over upper caste society. It explores how a Dalit community person struggled for proving his identity and equality in order to lead a stupendous life than his friends. Joseph vividly demonstrates on how restrictive cultural traditions are still implemented in India today. This paper shows the remarkable accounts of socio-political realities of Dalit community in the caste and culture based society of India.
