Social Mutation in Wole Soyinka’s The Strong Breed

Abstract

Social changes are a very essential one in this world. Because peoples are blindly follow many activities in an illogical way. It shows their lack of sense and knowledge. By insisting some valuable thought through the literature, we can easily change the society. This paper focused upon Yoruba's blind religious thoughts through Soyinka's The Strong Breed. This paper Soyinka perceptibly explained about the human sacrifice. This story ends with an individual sacrifice for the sake of their society and communal benefits. Yoruba society is having unique thoughts about ritual activities. The play is centered on the tradition of Egungun, a Yoruba festival tradition in which a scapegoat of the village person carries out the evil of the society. Here, Eman, the protagonist of the play takes the role of carrier. The villager is having beliefs that if the person is sacrificed as a scapegoat, the evil of their society also goes along with the carrier. It is a foolish activity of Yoruba society. If the society follows this kind of redundant activities means, it makes the society people into an arrogant and illicit manner. It does not attain any development and progress also.
