New Women’s Hankering For Gratification In Nayantarasahgal’s Novel This Time of Morning

Abstract

Feminists are concerned about the impact of women’s world wide integration. Some feminists argue that globalisation has led to economic changes that have raised more social and economical challenges for women. NayantaraSahgal, depicted the changing images of Indian women in the society in the post Independence era. The Indian women writers like NayantaraSahgal, ShashiDeshpande, Arundhati Roy, and Kamala Markandaya speak about Indian women’s sufferings at the hands of male patriarchy.  NayantaraSahgal’s women suffer only when relationships fail.  In every novel, she deals with the theme of Individual,s liberation and elaborates it against the backdrop of nation's struggle to achieve independence.

In This Time of Morning the women characters are bold enough to step out of their homes and walk-out from their marriages if they feel uncomfortable. Uma and Leela  play important role both in traditional and in modern ways.These women search for freedom harming themselves .Celia, Barbara and Nita are unable to create positive relationship with male characters in hankering for gratification. Through Rashmi, Uma and Nita, the women of new generation Sahgal has portrayed the  women’s total involvement in hankering for gratification.
